Known Issues

These are open problems in our own documentation — places where our guides disagree with each other, where advice is not actionable, or where we have not established something we have written about. We publish them rather than wait until they are fixed.

Errors we have already fixed are recorded on our corrections page. How we label what we know is explained in our evidence standards.

We disagree with ourselves about whether low storage causes buffering

    What the problem is
Some of our device guides state that low storage causes buffering. Our buffering guide states that storage and cache affect the app rather than network delivery, and will not change buffering caused by the connection. Both positions are currently published. Low storage reliably causes app crashes and slow loading — that part is not in dispute. Whether it causes buffering specifically is unresolved, and we have not established a mechanism by which it would.
What to do in the meantime
Freeing storage is quick and harmless, so it is still worth trying. If buffering continues afterwards, treat the connection as the more likely cause.

Our speed-test instructions mix two different tests

    What the problem is
Testing over Ethernet near the router measures what your line delivers. Testing on or beside the streaming device measures what actually reaches the player. These answer different questions, and for a buffering complaint the second is the more relevant one. Our guides currently present them as interchangeable, and several instruct readers to run a speed test without saying where.
What to do in the meantime
Run both. The wired figure tells you what your broadband delivers; the figure taken at the streaming device tells you whether enough of it is arriving.

Our router placement advice is not actionable for many readers

    What the problem is
Our guides advise placing the router centrally and away from thick walls. For many UK households the router is fixed at the master socket and cannot be moved. No guide currently acknowledges this or offers an alternative for readers in that position.
What to do in the meantime
Where the router cannot be moved, a wired connection or a powerline adapter addresses the same problem from the other end. Powerline performance depends heavily on house wiring, so compare before relying on it.
